Seminar: Digital Controlling

General Information:

The seminar „Digital Controlling“ comprises (1) a three-day class covering an introduction into the SAP CO module and (2) the writing and presentation of seminar papers on the digitalization of the management accounting/controlling function. Before the three-day class, students are required to prepare and hand in solutions to a typical management accounting problem that facilitates the understanding of the case study underlying the class. Participation in all events is mandatory.

Structure and goals:

The module gives participants an overview of the controlling module in SAP and raises current topics regarding the digitalization of the management accounting/controlling function. In a three-day course, students get an overview of the functionalities of SAP by implementing a case study covering typical components of management accounting (cost-center accounting, product costing, multi-level contribution margin accounting). In seminar papers, students will elaborate on current trends in management accounting and how digitalization and technological advances impact the controlling function in companies. The seminar papers are supervised jointly by supervisors of our chair and BearingPoint.

After attending the three-day course, students will be able to understand the opportunities and limitations of the controlling module of SAP. Furthermore, students are able to classify innovations within the conceptual development of the management accounting function.

The examination consists of mandatory participation in the three-day course, participation in a keynote lecture day, the writing of a seminar paper and its presentation in a team of 3-5 students. All components must be passed to successfully complete the module.

Dates

• Three-day course on SAP: 17.10.2022 - 19.10.2022 - we will meet in Zoom in case of a lockdown or other restrictions to convene at the university's premises. Voluntary digital assignment on the 27th to improve final grade.
• Keynotes on Digital Controlling: 17.11.2022 - location tbd (we will meet in Zoom in case of a lockdown or other restrictions to convene at the university's premises). 
• Presentation of seminar papers: 12.01.2023 - location tbd (we will meet in Zoom in case of a lockdown or other restrictions to convene at the university's premises.)
