Project study

What is a project study?

Project studies give students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge they acquired during their studies in practice. In addition, students gain experience in project management and working in dedicated project teams. Project studies are not supposed to be regular (mandatory) internships. Instead, students gain hands-on experience in the context of a specific project at a company. Potentially relevant projects are suggested by the company. The scope of the project study should be a clearly defined project task that can be completed in the project period (3-6 months). Projects are usually concluded with a report and a presentation, delivered to the company and the chair.

Supervision

Project studies are jointly supervised by the company partner and the chair, although the focus of the content is set by the company partner. The chair provides the company the opportunity to set the focus of the content while the chair is mainly responsible for the administrative processing and for advice in scientific writing, and, in consultation with the company partner, for the examination of the project study.

Topic

We offer project studies in all business areas. A close connection to the research areas of our chair is not necessary.

Scope

  • The project is carried out in a team of 2-5 students
  • The working period is 3-6 months, depending on whether the project is to be carried out "full-time" or "part-time"

Your benefit as a company

  • Topics are tailored to the needs of your company
  • Companies benefit from the rather practical results of the project
  • All projects are approved and supervised by our chair
  • Project work from a neutral point of view, detached from your corporate culture
  • Project work benefits from academic excellence and motivated students

General procedure

  • Project studies are proposed by companies throughout the year – though there may be fewer applications during the beginning of a semester (mid April and mid October)
  • First, students apply directly to host companies, either as a group or as individuals, which are later assigned to teams by the company
  • Second, we welcome the student team to contact us to ask for accompanying the project study as academic chair
  • A project study typically begins with a kick-off meeting and ends with a presentation and report
  • Project studies legally do not count as mandatory internships (“Pflichtpraktikum”). However, contracts with the students may be similar to regular internship contracts

If a collaboration within a project study is of interest to you and your company, please do not hesitate to contact us (office.cm@mgt.tum.de). We will present your project study on our homepage, so that students can apply for it.
