Advanced Seminar F&A: Scientific Writing

Course objectives

In the interactive seminar, important concepts, approaches, theories, and empirical studies are introduced and discussed. In doing so, students are encouraged to engage in discussions as well as students presentations in order to deepen the course content and to transfer the acquired theories and methods. The results of the term paper and presentation will be critically discussed with the students. Moreover, the (self)-study of literature is part of the module.

Prerequisites

The seminar is open for students in the following programs: Master in Management, Master in Management & Technology, Master TUM-BWL, TUM-WIN, TUM-NAWI, TUM-WITEC.

Topics

The seminar will be covering problems from the following fields:

  • Philosophy of science and ethics of scientific work
  • Research process and methods
  • Scientific writing and citing techniques
  • Discussion of research paper

The research question of the paper is to be specified individually. The following readings introduce to the topics:

  • Evans, D., Gruba, P., Zobel, J. 2014. How to Write a Better Thesis. Springer: Cham, Heidelberg, New York, Dordrecht, London.
  • Minto, B. 1987. The Pyramid Principle: Logic in Writing and Thinking. Minto International Inc.: USA.
  • Honig, B., Lampel, J., Siegel, D., Drnevich, P. 2014. Ethics in the Production and Dissemination of Management Research: Institutional Failure or Individual Fallibility? Journal of Management Studies, 51(1): 118-142.

Requirements

Participants are required to make the following contributions:

  • Seminar paper of about 15 pages on a problem to be specified with the instructor
  • In-class presentation of the paper
  • Grading is based on the performance in the written term paper (60%) and the oral presentation (40%).
  • The examination requirements will measure the student's ability to apply concepts, theories and methods within the field of scientific writing. The module is only considered passed if all parts were passed.

Application

The registration and distribution for the limited courses of the TUM School of Management takes place only via TUMonline.

All in-class days are mandatory. You cannot pass the seminar unless you attend these meetings. Day 2 (26.04.) and Day 4 (17.05.) will be used for feedback sessions on the seminar paper and presentation and appointments will be arranged individually.
